How to convert hours and minutes to decimal

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Seconds are divided by 3,600.

Why decimal hours?

Payroll and invoicing multiply hours by a rate, which only works with decimals. At $20 per hour, 7:45 is 7.75 × 20 = $155. Typing 7.45 instead would underpay by $5.
